Given how much material this book contains and its high production values, it is a bargain even at full price. It comes with a CD with all the tunes played on accordion. I’m really glad I bought it. It’s a great addition to my music collection and I will learn from it for a long time yet.What’s good.1) The accents, decorations, grace notes, etc. are carefully written out and are essential to this kind of music.2) The bass notation offers a lot of room to grow. (I agree with one of the other reviewers: Lowthian’s “explanation” of the jazz chords is completely obfuscatory.) I had to find a jazz chord chart online and learn from that. But once you catch on to the “jazz” chords, the texture of the pieces will become richer and more effective.3) Disagree with one of the reviewers about page turns. There are indeed a few (3-4?) infelicitous page turns, but compared with what some other publishers are doing, this edition is a paragon.4) The CD really shows what the pieces are supposed to sound like.Quibbles:1) So many of the tunes are impossibly fast, esp. the reels. Perhaps this corresponds with the nature of Scottish folk music, I don’t know. Nos. 1 through 35, to my mind, run from fast to blazingly fast, with rapid chord changes in the bass. There are only 2 or 3 that I would consider slow (and among them, the haunting “Neil Gow’s Lament for the Death of his Second Wife”). Perhaps some of the tunes can be played slower and still be “authentic.” That’s how I will have to play them for a long time yet.2) There are notes about each one of the tunes, but they are often rather too personal and breezy.3) Some of the tunes Lowthian composed himself. I suppose he knows what "traditional" is.4) No fingerings. The rapidly repeated notes will probably require some technical work.

This has a nice selection of different kinds of Scottish music. The CD is great to get the feel of how to play Scottish music. At the end of the book are about 10 Scottish Waltzes. They are all pretty songs and quite easy to play. They do add a lot of grace notes and that gives the songs a particular Scottish sound. Almost like playing the bagpipe but on the accordion instead.

This is a wonderful music book and a great book of Scottish music. I am new to this type of music on accordion, though I have been a college pipe band instructor for over 13 years. I bought this book to expand my accordion repertoire. The music is catchy and arranged with some excellent modern jazz harmonies. The description of the bass technique of combining chords and bass buttons is a good introduction to these jazz chords, but the fingering is not explained well and an experienced teacher would be required for proper execution of many of them. Though I have a degree in music, I found myself having to study these chords for a long time in order to make sense of them. I did notice some frustrating errors in the chord names (maj where it should have said min) which I had to find by listening to the recording and building the right hand chords. There is a lack of clarity at times about which chord members require counterbass buttons which would have been helpful, too. Those who use American-style bass fingerings (like I do) and are used to American Accordionist Association notation may have some difficulty with the notation of counterbass notes and chord symbols since this book does not use that system.As for the recording, the performance is stunning. There do seem to be some annoying clicks on many tracks and I can't tell if it is mechanical noise from the instrument or a recording issue.I would highly recommend this book to any accordionist interested in Scottish music, or even practical jazz harmonization.
